Festivals are observed in all Gurdwaras with worship, special Prayers, Hymn singing, recitation of poems. The Sikh festivals are generally called Gurparbs. Birth and Death anniversaries of the Guru or special historical events like Baisakhi, Hola Mohalla, Diwali, etc.

 

 

Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji's birthday--Founder of Sikh Religion. Born 15th April 1469, it is traditionally celebrated on Puranmase day in Katak (October November).

Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji's birthday
--Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji was born at Patna on 22nd December 1666. It is celebrated according to the Bikrami calendar (December/January).

Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji--the first installation of the Sikh scripture in the Golden Temple, (held in 1604 in August). The second is the installation of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji as the permanent Guru (in October 1708). It is called Guru Granth Guryai Gurparb.

Diwali-- This festival falls in October November. On this day (1620) Guru Hargobind came back to Amritsar, after his release from Gwalior Jail. Diwali is also called the festival of lights. People were so happy to see the Guru released from jail they lit Diva's (lamps) to welcome the Guru.

Baisakhi--Birthday of the Khalsa. Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji established the Khalsa Brotherhood (Pure Ones), on March 30th 1699. It is celebrated on 13th of April every year.

Holla Mohalla--Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji started the celebration of Holla Mohalla when mock-battles, military exercise, archery, wrestling, gatka (fencing). The big festival is held at FatehGarh Sahib in Punjab.

There are certain Gurparbs celebrated to commemorate certain important events.

Sri Guru Arjan Dev Ji's Martyrdom--A special celebration is held at
Gurdwara Dera Sahib in Lahore (Pakistan). This is celebrated in June.

Sri Guru Teg Bahader's Martyrdom--A special celebration is held at Gurdwara Sisganj, Gurdwara Rikabganj, and Delhi. Generally falls in November.

Foundation of the city Amritsar--Sri Guru Ram Das Ji laid the foundation of the Amritsar city in 1577. A special function is held at the Golden Temple Amritsar.
