Sri Guru Ram Das Ji

Ram Das was born in a Sodhi Family at Lahore on September 24th 1534.  His father’s name was Hari Das and his mother’s name was Daya Kaur.  Ram Das Ji also known as Bhai Jetha lost his parents at the age of seven.  His Grandmother came to Lahore and took him to Basarka where she lived.

Jetha began selling boiled grain.  He would often give free grain to the poor and hungry people.  He worked hard to make a living, by selling grain.

Once he went to visit Goindwal with his friends and was highly influenced by the teaching of Guru Amardas Ji.  He begged Guru Amardas to keep him as his servant.   Jetha worked in the “Langar” and also sold grains for his own living.  Guru Amar Das tought Jetha Punjabi and Gurbani.

Guru Amardas Ji had two daughters.  One of the daughters was married and one was still single.  One day Guru Amardas Ji’s wife asked him to look for a husband like Jetha for their single daughter.  Guru Amardas said, that no one else was like Jetha, why not Jetha be her Husband.  Jetha got married to their daughter Bibi Bhani.

As always Jetha worked hard helping out at the “Langar”, singing shabads and listening to Guru Amardas.  Not only Jetha won the heart of Guru Amardas Ji’s daughter, but also became the next Guru of the Sikhs.

Guru Ram Das Ji succeeded Guru Amardas Ji to the Gur Gaddi.  Guru Amardas Ji had made him undergo many tests before he selected him to be the next Guru of the Sikhs.  It was Guru Ram Das Ji’s patience, devotion and humility, which had won him Gurdom.

Guru Ram Das strengthened the lesson of Seva and Simran.  He founded the city of Amritsar in 1577.  He contributed 638 Hymns including Pauris and Salokas.  He composed all his Bani in 30 Ragas, and in pure Punjabi language.  He composed the wedding Hymns (Lavan or Anand Karaj).  He created the "Massand" order and this ensured funds for nation building activities.  He laid down the Sikh routine and code of conduct.  He made Amrit Sarover under his own command.

As a poet , missionary and a nation builder, Guru Ram Das Ji put the Sikhism on the path of development.
